Bye Bye Shredded Shins

My shins tell a long story of cycling trips past. They tell you through all the pedal strike scars. I have an inventive swear word for each one, but no profanities are needed with the JetBlack ThermoFlat Pedals.

Coming from a mountain biking background, we’re used to pedals with wide platforms (105mm x 100mm) and multiple metal pins for maximum grip. They’re often made from a heavy duty nylon composite or alloy durable enough to withstand all the knocks and falls on a trail. Plenty of grip, but man it hurts when they shred your shins.

Dog Friendly Pedals

On gravel bikes built to carry dogs and more weight, we looked for pedals similar to mountain biking pedals – grippy, without metal pins, and composed of a lightweight material. Clipless was never an option because we’re constantly on-and-off the pedals for safety. When the dogs need to move around in their crates, we need to counter-weigh their movements with a foot hovering to the side, or a few ground foot-jabs.

Enter JetBlack’s ThermoFlats… made from a durable, lightweight nylon material, they have a wide (100 x 100mm) platform with co-mouled nylon pins, giving us all grip, without the pain. Lightweight nylon pedals with nylon “pins” are safer around the dogs when they run alongside us, or chill/ play by the bikes on our rest breaks. Metal pins around pooches are a no-no. There’s a high risk the dogs will run into the pedals while running alongside the bikes on the trail, or even when resting or playing near the bike on our rest breaks.

Our Riverside Touring bike has the black ThermoFlats, while our Polygon Path sports the grey colourway. I’m eyeing the red ones too…

Play

Nylon grip on our pedals over metal pins for dogpacking and cycling with dogs on trails. Rest stops, zoomies, and pedal strikes just got much safer!
