Bring on the rain…

I get a bit excited when it rains because this jacket can finally come out of the bag. There’s many features that make me reach for the Mountain Designs Stratus Rain Jacket when it’s wet outside.

Cycling in an unbreathable rain jacket is uncomfortable. The Stratus has a seam-sealed 2.5-layer construction: a lightweight, waterproof and windproof Pertex® shell over a breathable membrane; and you can feel the difference. I still sweat under this jacket, but I sweat less. For more ventilation I unzip the underarm zippers to get much needed air flow under there. It’s an added luxury on the trail.

The two-way zipper adds to the breathability and moveability. Cycling is easier when you unzip the bottom half and you still get maximum coverage in a downpour. The two-way zip ventilation is inviting on wet, humid days on the trail. If it’s cold, I use the drawcord hem to adjust the length when I cycle.

In the arms, the Stratus has an ergonomic cut with articulated elbows that gives you a good range of movement. I particularly love the adjustable velcro cuffs for a tapered fit – it looks so good, it’s comfortable, and you don’t have to worry about loose fabric getting in the way when you’re using your hands for technical things on the trail. Speaking of shape, it also has bust darts that shape the body nicely. I absolutely love chest zip pockets on outdoor gear and this jacket ticks that box too. It’s the perfect spot to store your phone for quick snaps.

The adjustable hood fits over my small helmet when unzipped slightly to give more allowance. You can wear it under your helmet as well. It also has an unassuming chin guard that’s pretty useful for visibility and comfort.

The Stratus barely weighs anything and is easy to stash.
